Bettie Sue Smith

October 27, 1940 — June 5, 2023

Bettie Sue, 82, passed away on June 5, 2023 after a long and joyful life. She was born
on October 27, 1940 to MacDaniel and Lorene Currie in Seagraves, Texas.
Sue grew up mostly in West Texas but also lived in North Dakota as a child, where her
dad worked in the oilfield. She would later settle in Ranger, Texas with her husband, Ken Grice,
where she lived for the bulk of her life; before that, however, Ken and Sue were adventurous
souls and they made friends everywhere they moved. They were both gifted storytellers in their
own respect.
Sue was adventurous in her job pursuits as well. She worked for Harv-Al Athletic
Manufacturing in Ranger. She and Ken operated a restaurant, The Ancient Mariner; she also
owned two beauty salons (first, My Fair Lady and later, Reflections); and a paint store, The
House of Color. She worked in the healthcare industry managing Tri Star Home Care of Cisco.
Sue was also a gifted artist. She sold arts and crafts at street festivals and various
booths in Ft. Worth and Granbury. She sold oil paintings and gave art lessons, including recently
for the residents at The Woodlands Assisted Living and Rehabilitation. Murals of her art can be
seen at the Gholson Hotel in Ranger and at Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her two siblings: Mary Margaret and Jim
Currie. She was also preceded by her husbands, Ken Grice and Weldon Smith; as well as her
son, Steve Ashworth, and her grandson, Nick Ashworth. She is survived by her daughter, Lesa
Herod; her grandchildren: Robin Tice, MacDaniel Ashworth, Leah Herod, Reagan Herod, Evan
Herod, and Cordero Kuykendall; and her great-grandchildren.
Sue was a member of the Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland where a
memorial service will be held on June 10th at 2:00 p.m.
