Billy Joe Hendrix, a beloved member of the Sweetwater community, passed away on June 21, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on March 14, 1950 in Snyder, Texas to Beverly and Wendell Hendrix. Billy proudly served his country from November 1971 till June of 1972 in the Army during the Vietnam War, where he reached the rank of Private. A true patriot, Billy's commitment to his country was unwavering, and his service will not be forgotten.
In addition to his military service, Billy was known for his exceptional skills as a pool player, his joy at playing golf and his knack for fixing anything that came his way. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, engaging in activities like fishing, camping, and hunting. Billy had a warm and welcoming personality, never hesitating to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. His willingness to help others and his generous spirit endeared him to all who knew him.
He married Gwen Hendrix of Odessa, Texas in 1974. He worked in the oilfield and attended Odessa College and became a valve technician.
Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Willie Stewart; sister, Debra Sharp; brother, Gene Hendrix.
Billy is survived by his son, Jason Hendrix and wife Rita Hendrix and Kody Hendrix; grandchildren, Kyle, Kaden, Jay, Iza, Kaytlin and Abigail; great grandson, Noah and arriving in November Viviana; brothers, Sammy Hendrix, Timothy Stewart and wife Samantha, Mark Lucky and wife Kathy as well as many nieces and nephews. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Funeral services for Billy Joe Hendrix will be held on July 1, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas, with a ceremony to commemorate his life and service. In his honor, we celebrate the life of a remarkable man who touched the lives of many and left a lasting legacy. Billy will be dearly missed, but his spirit will continue to shine bright in the memories of all who knew him.
