Known best as Papa, was a man who loved his family, loved to hunt, fish and search for arrowheads. His season was cut short on Dec. 4, 2020, at the age of 81.
He was born to Robert (Fats) and Callie (Kate) Phelps Justice on Oct. 5, 1939. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, older brother Johnny, and great granddaughter Kylee.
Delbert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Annette Biles Justice. His son Lynn and wife Debbie, his daughter Linda, and his daughter Sabrenia and her husband Steve. He was blessed with seven grandchildren; Tavia, Shayne, Quade, Jade, Jeremy, Sierra and Shileigh, and seven great grandchildren; Braden, Tori, Rowdy Blu, Desseray, Alexis, Lena, and Zadi.
When Delbert met Annette in 1959 he wanted to drive her home from the drive in movies. He had to ask permission from her mother and her mother asked “who it was” because she could not see in the dark. Annette responded, “Delbert Justice” and her grandmother replied “not with that Justice Thug”. Turns out he was not a “thug” at all, but a strong, kind, simple, old-fashioned country boy who became the rock of the family.
Delbert was a hard worker, who spent most of his working career driving gas transport trucks. He later owned a roadside mechanic and tire shop with his son Lynn.
He shared his passion of hunting for arrowheads and artifacts with his family. Now none of them can walk through a pasture without looking down at the rocks and history hidden in the soil.
Delbert spent his time sampling all of the wonderful cakes, pies, jellies, and candies so lovingly made by his wife Gram. She always made him “work” for his samples by washing her dishes.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020 at 6-8:00PM at Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland, Texas.
Papa always said “when I die drag me to the pasture and let the Coyotes have me.”
He will be laid to rest in a private cemetery on their home place- this is as close as we can get to the coyotes. We will honor his life with graveside services on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020 at 3:00 PM at 1425 CO Rd. 180, Cisco, Texas.
All of you who knew Delbert, know he was kind, strong, and caring. If you needed it he would give you the shirt off his back, so in lieu of flowers let that kindness continue with donations to the Eastland County Food Pantry, 105 Olive St. Eastland, Texas.
Let’s go fishing Papa!
