EASTLAND – Donald “Don” Vernon, age 69, walked through Heaven’s gates Friday, October 9, 2020. Services for Don will be 10 am Tuesday. October 13, 2020 at the Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland. Family and friends will gather from 6 – 8 pm on Monday at Edwards Funeral Home, 411 S. Mulberry, Eastland.
Donald Mendel Vernon was born October 19, 1950 in Houston, TX to Mendel Dean and Audrey Almond Vernon and was a graduate of North Richland Hill High School. After graduation he joined the US Army, finally retiring in 1994 after 25 year of service. He then came to Eastland and went to work for J & J Air Conditioning as a bookkeeper and office manager and was still working until his illness.
Don was a collector, collecting Coca Cola, John Wayne and baseball memorabilia along with many baseball cards. It had been a dream of his to open a collector’s store in Eastland when he retired. Because of his love for all things baseball, he spent the last 25 years as the scorekeeper for the Lady Mavs Softball Team and these amazing young ladies will serve as his pall bearers. Don was also an active member of the Daugherty St. Church of Christ.
He is survived by his children; Chris Vernon and wife Krystal, and Diana Vernon and their mother Cheri Emert, 4 grandchildren; Ryan Vernon, Megan Brook Stevens and husband Thomas, Tonie Yanez and Nathan Yanez, 4 great-grandchildren; Addison, Hadley, Audree and Behr, and 2 bonus grandchildren; Grayson and Abbye Forbus. Don is also survived by his 2 brothers; Dean Vernon and Larry Vernon and wife Cathy and several nieces and Nephews.
