Imogene Newton Haun

March 14, 1929 — January 10, 2016

Imogene Newton Haun, 86 of Eastland passed away Sunday in Brownwood. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Cross Cut Cemetery in Brown County. The family will receive friends at Edwards Funeral Home Thursday, 5~7:00 p.m.
Mrs. Haun was born on March 14, 1929 at the family home near Cross Cut, TX to Lewis E. and Ina (Chambers) Newton. She attended elementary school at Cross Cut, and graduated from Cross Plains High School in 1946 as valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX in 1950 with a BS degree. She then went on to finish her graduate work from the University of Texas in Austin and Texas Women’s University in Denton. She married R.P. “Buddy” Haun on June 3, 1953 in Coleman. She taught school for 31 years retiring in 1991. She began her teaching career at Coleman High School in 1950 where she taught Home Economics for 3 years. She taught Chemistry at Comanche High School from 1953-53, Biology & Earth Science at Ranger High School from 1954-55, and Chemistry & Biology at Eastland High School for 9 years as well as Home Economics for 17 years, where she developed the program and taught Home Economics Cooperative Education, for a total of 26 years at Eastland. She was elected “Football Queen” by the Maverick Football team in 1969. She was also a member of the Site Base Committee for Eastland High School. She was preceded in death by her husband Buddy on March 19, 1999, as well as brothers, Ferrell Newton, and J.W. Newton.
She was very active on various committees at First United Methodist Church in Eastland where she was a long time Sunday School teacher, Bible School Director, and United Methodist Women. She was also a long time member of VHTAT, TSTA, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi, and Retired Teachers Association of Texas.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Folsom and husband Al; a son, Brian P. Haun; grandchildren, Gardner Elizabeth Mack and husband Will, and William Maury Folsom; brother, Dr. Weldon Newton; sister, Anita Newton Lane; and 2 great-grandchildren, Duncan and Annie Mack. If so desired, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Haun's name to the First United Methodist Church, 215 S. Mulberry, Eastland, TX 76448.
