Imogene Hagar Johnson, 89, of Stephenville and formerly of Gordon went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. The family will receive friends Friday at Edwards Funeral Home Strawn from 5 until 7:00 P.M. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Gordon with Brent Beale, Barb Venable Cotton, and Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the New Gordon Cemetery.
Imogene was born June 29, 1925 to Oran Luther Hagar Sr. and Hallie Valera (Brabbin) Hagar in Cisco, Texas and was the only daughter to their nine children. She grew up in Fort Worth where she graduated from Polytechnic High School. She worked for Montgomery Ward and then for Fort Worth National Bank. She married L.B. “Bennie” Johnson on March 14, 1947 and they settled in Gordon, TX to raise their family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church there and played the organ for countless weddings and funerals over the years. She had a great Christian faith and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. When her last child was old enough, she went back to work as a cashier at restaurants, then retiring as a bookkeeper from First National Bank in Gordon. She loved to travel and spend time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband on February 22, 2005; and by seven brothers, John Leldon, Arthur, Derwood, O.L., Carroll, Don & Paul Hagar.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Johnson and wife Janelle of Bedford; daughters, Benita Smiddy and husband Mike of Mineral Wells, Denise Skaggs of Watauga, Phyllis Edwards of Eastland, and Teresa Sharp of Stephenville; grandchildren, Sarah Smiddy Holt & husband Clay, Adam Smiddy & wife Brooke, Jennifer Skaggs, Travis Skaggs & wife Jen, Ben Edwards & wife Taryn, Blake Edwards, Natalie Moore, Wendy Carroll, and Valerie Herber; great-grandchildren, Isis & Hannah Skaggs, Autry & Cameron Holt, Heather Goldsby, and she was excited about Jacob Charles Edwards who is due to enter the world on Thanksgiving; a brother, Bobby Hagar & wife Mary Margaret, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
