Kenneth Songer

Kenneth Wayne Songer, 73, of Rising Star, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 21, 2013. A celebration of life will be held at Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland starting with visitation Thursday, August 29 from 5-7pm. At 9:00am, Friday, August 30 family and friends are asked to gather at Edwards Funeral Home for a procession to Oaklawn Cemetery in Gorman for a 10:00am graveside service.

Ken was born in Jennings, TX May 1st, 1940. A beloved husband, father, and brother, Kenneth is survived by his loving wife of 54 yrs. Helen (Sims) Songer, Children: preceded in death by son, Randall Wayne Songer a daughter Carrie Gayle (Songer) Simmons.  He is also survived by grandchildren Kateland Simmons, Karley Simmons, Daniel Songer and Jacob Songer, Siblings Elaine Kennedy, Margie Skidmore, Edwin Songer, Connie Dagley, Louise Michelle, Kathy Jarrett, and Shelia Pitts.

He is preceded in death by siblings: Carl Weldon Songer, Joyce Aleta Merritt, and Arthur Marion Songer, and his parents Father: Hubert Arthur Songer and Mother: Syble E. Wilhite Songer.

Ken's hobbies included playing guitar, singing, Bee keeping, breeding and showing horses, gardening, and being a great marksman. Kenneth was also an amazing family man. After Odessa High School He completed his electrician license, He was in the Insurance field 51 years earning the distinction: LUTCF.  He owned an Insurance Agency, Texas Insurance Advisors and was the General Manager of Allegro Mobility Medical Supply.

Ken played guitar with Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison.  When Buddy Holly obtained a new guitar, he gave Ken his old one so Ken could add his many talents to the band in Holly's Lubbock garage. Ken also belonged to a quartet, which recorded ads for the Pioneer Furniture store, in Odessa, TX.

Ken owned, raised, and bred prestigious horses for 30 years, Grand Champions in many Texas quarter horse competitions. Ken and Randy were skillfull in wood work and built all of his family's beautiful homes and barns. Kenneth was the epitome of what a husband, father, and grandfather should always be. His wonderful sense of humor and gentle loving heart will be greatly missed.
