The funeral service for Leona Miller Roberts of Gordon, Texas, will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 10:00 AM at the Gordon United Methodist Church in Gordon, Texas. Visitation will be Friday evening, May 29, 2015, from 5-7 pm under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home, Strawn, Texas.
Leona, daughter of Grady E. Miller and Beulah Oliver Miller, was born and raised in the Simms Valley community and attended school at Huckabay, where she graduated in 1943. She went on to graduate from North Texas State University.
She taught school at Huckabay, Strawn and Gordon before retiring after 29 years. Upon retirement, she worked at the First National Bank of Gordon for several years.
Leona married Jesse Morris on November 30, 1945 and operated a family dairy with him until his death in 1956.
She continued to run the family dairy until her marriage to her second husband, E.A. Roberts in 1959. Leona and E.A. had one son, Montie Allen Roberts in 1960.
Mrs. Roberts was extremely active in her school, church and community. She served on the Gordon School Board, was a Charter Member and past president of the Gordon Women's Club, served on the Economic Development Cooperation of Gordon as well as the Thurber Historical Museum Board.
She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, trusted friend, cherished aunt, teacher and mentor to generations of students. Her legacy will be that of a steadfast faith through pain and a limitless quest for experiencing all that life has to offer.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son in 1965, her husband in 1994 her brother Grady E. Miller Jr., her brother James (J.W.) Miller and her sister, Evelyn Miller McCloy.
She is survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
