Mamie Lee Whitenton

September 28, 1926 — November 27, 2016

Mamie Lee Cole Whitenton left this world on angel wings November 27, 2016 surrounded by family and friends at the Glen Rose Nursing and Rehab Center. Services will be Friday, December 2nd at 11:00 am at Trinity Baptist Church in Strawn, Texas with interment to follow at Doty Cemetery in Gordon, Texas.
Mamie was born to Bessie Lee Gist Cole and Robert Bishop Cole on September 28, 1926 at home in Zephyr, Texas. She was the fourth child with five brothers-Randall, Charles, David, and younger twin brothers Ned and Ted, and a sweet younger sister Minnie Cole Cutbirth.
Mamie married James H. Whitenton on October 4, 1942 shortly after her 16th birthday as her young 18 year old husband and her brothers left to fight in WWII and march into history as part of the Greatest Generation. After the war Mamie and Jimmie faced many challenges and triumphs as they raised their seven children. James died April 24, 1984 and Mamie continued to raise her family working and participating in her church as a faithful life time Baptist. Her love of helping others and willingness to always give of her friendship and cooking skills made her potato salad, coconut cake, and chocolate pies a real treat for those who had the pleasure of eating them.
As Mamie's health declined she became a resident of Glen Rose Nursing and Rehab Center where she enjoyed two years of new friendships always smiling and talking and interacting with other residents and staff. We are very grateful for the compassionate care that was given to “Little Mamie" by her nurses and CNA's especially her last days on this earth. Mamie celebrated her "90th" birthday surrounded by love in September.
Mamie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Randall Cole and his wife Erma Lee, Charles Cole, and Ted Cole. She is survived by brothers, David Cole & wife Virginia, Ned Cole & wife Jean; sister, Minnie Bess Cutbirth (Treldon), sister-in-law’s, Yvonne (Randall) and Betty (Charles); 7 children Elizabeth Ann Flores (Jim Pete), Linda Carol Farrill (Terry, Teresa Regino (Paul), Thomas Lee, Martin David, Mary Alice Whitenton, and John Kelly; 19 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and at last count 5 great-great grandchildren. Mamie also is survived by several nieces & nephews in the Cole and Whitenton families as well as numerous cousins & their children in the Gist & Cole families. Mamie loved all the little children including the little four-legged fur-babies. Donations to any charity for children or local animal shelter would be appreciated.
