Mary K Kitchens of Strawn, TX, was called home on January 11, 2024, at the age of 96.
Mary K was born on May 10, 1927 in Thurber, TX to Leland White and Clemont Cox White. She
married her love and best friend, Vester Kitchens, on June 14, 1947 in Strawn, TX. He preceded
her in death on April 28, 1989.
Mary K was a member of the First Baptist Church in Strawn. She was a member of the Order of
the Eastern Star for 68 years, serving as treasurer for many of those, and led countless projects
and fundraisers in conjunction with the Masonic Lodge. She was active in the Strawn PTA and
delivered meals on wheels to those in the Strawn area for many years. She loved to travel across
the United States with family and friends, eventually visiting 48 of the 50 states, and was always
ready for the next trip. She enjoyed any time she could spend with family and friends including
summers spent with them all gathered at the lake house she and Vester owned on Palo Pinto
Lake. She was a talented painter and was especially gifted at capturing on canvas the intricate
details of the Texas landscape. She was known for her delicious potato salad at summer
gatherings, her cornbread dressing during the holidays, and the tin full of homemade candy at
Christmas that was always there to welcome any visitors to their home. She was a devoted wife
and wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Leland White and Clemont Phariss; Husband, Vester
Kitchens; Sister-in-law, Magdalyn Jackson; Son-in-law, Charles Knight; Brother-in-law Charles
Barkholtz; Sister, Madeline Nelson; and Nephew Andrew Jackson.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Knight; Sister, Jodi Barkholtz; Grandchildren, Kay Luckstead
and husband, Erik, and Kynn Knight and wife, Sarah; Great Grandchildren, Grant Luckstead,
Logan Luckstead, Charles Knight, and Charlotte Knight; Nephew David Jackson and wife,
Melinda; Nephew John Kelley and Niece Sheila Kelley.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Edwards Funeral Home in
Strawn. Graveside service will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Mount Marion
Cemetery in Strawn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you send memorial contributions to the charity of
your choice in her name.
