Ronnie Mercer passed away Tuesday September 13, 2016 at home surrounded by his family. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Leon River Cowboy Church with Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastland City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland Friday, 6~8 p.m.
Ronnie was born December 11, 1956 in California to Gerald Robert Mercer and Jessie Lou (Holden) Mercer. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1976 he worked for Otis Coleman Siding, when he met his wife, Lyn Annette Burns. They married July 31, 1981. He was active in the Boy Scouts, becoming a Scout Master in the 80’s. He worked at EBAA Iron for several years making life-long friends.
His most rewarding job by far was with the EISD where he worked in the maintenance department. He had various titles but his most favorite, by far, was driving the buses. He loved seeing and being around the kids. It didn’t take long before the kids were calling him dad or gramps. He retired from EISD in May, 2016 after 17 years. Ronnie’s most favorite hobbies were camping and cooking. He really enjoyed cooking for family and friends. His greatest passion was being a Captain on the Olden Fire Department. He loved his brothers on the fire department. They weren’t friends, they were family. Ronnie was an amazing person.
He was commonly called dad or gramps. Just spending 5 minutes with him you walked away wanting to be a better person. He was easily someone you could respect and admire. We are all truly blessed to have had him in our lives and he will be missed forevermore.
Preceded him in death is a brother, Gary Louis Arnold in 1974; paternal grandfather, Robert Mercer; paternal grandmother, Velma Burger Mercer; maternal grandfather, Jefferson Lewis Holden; and maternal grandmother, Elis Evan Holden.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lyn Annette Mercer; parents, Bob and Jessie Mercer; in-laws, Gene and Pat Burns all of Olden; one daughter, Misty Lego and husband Charlie of Abilene; one son, Rob Mercer and wife Rasha of Eastland; one special granddaughter, Harper Grace Mercer of Eastland; four grand-dogs, Squirt, Jack, Carson, and Ruger; two brothers, Keith Mercer and wife Sandy of Albuquerque, NM, and Wayne Mercer and wife Kelli of Bastrop, TX; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Robert DeLuca, Dr. Bill Simpson and Dr. Melnyk, Jr. In lieu of flowers the family asks any donations be made to the Olden Fire Department.
