RANGER – Ronny Powell, 53 of Ranger, passed away Friday November 3, 2017 in Mineral Wells, TX. A memorial Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27th at St. Rita Catholic Church in Ranger.
Ronny was born February 20, 1964 in Abilene to Burris Ray Powell and Lillian Estelle (Patterson) Powell. He graduated from Merkel High School, Cisco Jr. College, McMurray University, and received his Master’s Degree from the University of New Orleans. He taught drama at Merkel High School, Tahoka High School, and several universities before retiring from Ranger High School. While at CJC, he had the opportunity to play in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He acted in several commercials and movies, including JFK with Kevin Costner. He was in the Abilene Repertory Theatre for several years. He was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church in Ranger, and Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1864 in De Leon. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two brothers, Gary Straach (Kari) of McKinney, TX, and Richard Straach of Port Aransas; four sisters, Linda Picon of Mishawaka, IN, Deanna Greer of Zephyr, TX, Chyree Jones of Odessa, TX, and Cindy McElyeh of Ovilla, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and wonderful drama students.
Ronny’s family wishes to extend their gratitude & appreciation to longtime friends Chip and Wynelle Lang. They shared vacations, passion for history and teaching, and were there through all of the challenges Ronny faced with his health these last few years. They have been angels here on earth.
