Sandra Sue Overman

February 21, 1942 — February 28, 2017

Sandra Overman was born February 21, 1942 along with her twin brother, Jimmy Lew, to Clifford Burns and Mary Pauline Walker Underwood. She passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 4 PM at the Hendrick Hospice in Abilene, TX. Services will be held 10:30 AM at Lake Leon Baptist Church Friday, March 3, 2017, with burial to follow in Staff Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 6-8 PM at Edwards Funeral Home.
The twins were born in San Angelo, Texas. Sandra married Jerry Dwayne Overman on August 25, 1957 in Colorado City, Texas. A year later, on August 5, 1958, they were blessed with their first son, William Wayne (Skeeter) Overman. Sherry Lynn was born Feb.28, 1960, and Jerry Cliff was born September 15, 1964. Family was always the primary reason for everything Sandra did, worked at, or became involved in. In 1982, Dwayne and Sandra became the legal guardians of Cindy Lafon Underwood and Edward Harry Underwood, their niece and nephew. They were legal guardians for a year, but were always involved and influencing their lives. The entire family stayed intact for 60 years because of the influence and leadership of Dwayne and Sandra. Theirs was a Christian home and they always dedicated themselves to servanthood.
Sandra entered the nursing profession in 1974, saying it was because of an accident that Dwayne was involved in 1967. He was in an explosion at the Mabee Gas Plant outside of Midland and was hospitalized for 3 months, and recovering for the entire year. She provided his primary care throughout the ordeal. Sandra was always a nurse, and took care of Dwayne then and after his severe accident in 1971. She then nursed Sherry back to health in 1979 after she broke her neck, and again in 2000, after she broke her neck and back in a car accident. The greatest trial of her life was losing Skeeter in an oilfield accident in 1980. In Andrews, Texas, she worked at Community Hospital, at Permian General Hospital, for Dr. Natver Jariwala, for Dr. Flory, and the hospice before she retired. She took care of her first 2 grandkids, Lacie Lynn and Jordan Dwayne Davidson (Sherry’s kids) while Sherry went back to school to get her teaching certification. She remained involved in their lives and when Jerry’s kids came along, she was always willing to travel to see and support them in their all their endeavors. Even as recently as Saturday, February 11th, she traveled to San Antonio to watch Sydney play in a basketball tournament. Her kids and grandkids were her pride and joy, and she relished spending time with them, and Katie bar the door if anyone said or did anything that was less than good towards her family.
Because of Sandra’s 60 year addiction to nicotine, she succumbed to COPD in her last decade. Breathing was a struggle, and more so in recent years. The last 3 months, she knew the end was near because of her nursing experience, she knew the signs. She expressed her last wishes repeatedly. She stated repeatedly, that her physical condition was all her fault and that she wished she had never started. She expressed her wishes that everyone know that their decision to smoke is not a personal one… it involves family and loved ones. This is because all of them have been affected by her decision to smoke all those years. She said if she could influence one person to never smoke or to quit smoking, she knew she was making a difference.
Sandra is survived by her spouse of almost 60 years, Jerry Dwayne Overman. Daughter: Sherry Lynn Davidson and her husband Davy. Granddaughter: Lacie Lynn O’Neil and her husband, Brandon, and 2 great grandkids: Grace and Jaxon O’Neil. Grandson: Jordan Dwayne Davidson and his wife Erin. Son: Jerry Cliff Overman and his wife Angela. Grandkids: Ryley Wayne, Russell James, and Sydney SueAnne Overman (Nana's namesake). A nephew and niece, who were like her own kids, Edward Underwood and Cindy Baker. Sandra would list her entire family, but the scroll could not contain the whole. She has numerous brothers and sisters, in-law. She has so many nieces and nephews, too numerous to list. She loved them all, worried about them all, and prayed for them all.
She repeatedly stated this last week that she was ready for whatever God had for her. She said, “I win either way. If I live, it’s more time with my grandkids. If I die, it’s more time with those who are already in heaven. I win, either way. I know I have a new assignment, and no one better butt in!” She told us, “I’ll be sliding down rainbows, and dancing on clouds!” I know she is doing just that!
Sandra wishes that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Lake Leon Baptist Church in Eastland, TX or to a charity of your choosing.
