Squire Burton (Burt) Cathey, age 88, went home to be with the Lord Friday, June 28, 2017. Services will be at 11 am Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home at 215 E. Housley, Strawn, TX. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Monday also at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Vansickle Cemetery, 4616 CR 2230, Caddo Mills at 4 pm.
Burt was born on February 17, 1929 in the community of Cash, Texas in Hunt County to Squire Burton and Mae Mason Cathey and attended school at Caddo Mills. In December of 1949 he enlisted in the US Army. He served his country in the war in Korea. After he returned home he met and married the love of his life Betty Sue Swift. They were married for 60 ½ years. Burt work in maintenance for Gordon ISD. Prior to that he was a ranch foreman for many years. A big part of that was spent on horseback. Just by looking at him you knew he was truly an American Cowboy.
Burt was a member of the VFW, Gordon Volunteer Fire Dept., which he proudly served, and a member of the Gordon City Counsel. He enjoyed the youth of Gordon. Throughout his life he was an active supporter of 4H and band boosters. He enjoyed gardening and was known to have a green thumb. People will be enjoying the love and his labor with his roses, cannas, passion vines and wisterias for years to come. Burt also enjoyed his westerns. Whether it was in old TV shows or reading novels he loved the lifestyle and adventures of the old west. For those who knew him they understood his love for all things John Wayne. But his greatest love was his grandchildren and getting to take them fishing. He was never happier than when he was with them especially rocking back and forth on his yard swing.
He is preceded in death by his wife Betty Sue, his parents, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
Burt is survived by 2 sons; Carl Burton Cathey and partner Jimmy Moe of Grass Valley, CA, and Bradley Clark Cathey and wife Julie of Weatherford, Tx. daughter Deena Beth McElroy and husband Nickey of Richardson, Tx , 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
